Why fake apps work

Illegal lending apps promise instant money with no checks. They often charge huge hidden fees, demand access to your contacts and photos, and harass borrowers. Some take an "advance fee" and never send a loan at all.

Check who the real lender is

In India, only banks and RBI-registered NBFCs can lend. A genuine app or website will name its lending partner. Search the NBFC's name on the RBI website's list of registered NBFCs and confirm it matches. If no lender is named, walk away.

Never pay before disbursal

Legitimate lenders deduct processing fees from the loan amount or add them to your repayment. They never ask you to transfer money first to "unlock" or "insure" your loan. Any request for an upfront payment by UPI, wallet or bank transfer is a scam.

Look at the permissions

RBI rules limit what digital lenders can access on your phone. An app asking for your full contact list, photo gallery or call logs is a red flag. Genuine apps need only what's required for KYC, such as your camera for a selfie and location with your consent.

Demand the Key Fact Statement

Every regulated digital loan must come with a Key Fact Statement showing the APR, fees, repayment schedule, cooling-off period and grievance contacts — before you sign. No KFS means no loan.

If you've already been targeted

Don't pay any more money. Take screenshots of messages and transactions, report the app on the store, file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, and inform your bank. You can also report to RBI's Sachet portal.

Dhanrivo will never ask you to pay any fee before disbursal or share your OTP, PIN or password over a call.
